Printing Issues?

With Apple releasing versions 10.9, 10.10, and now 10.11 of their operating system for the MacBook and MacBook Air, a lot of people have been experiencing trouble printing.  Some of the most common problems have been error messages saying: “Unable to locate printserver” or “printer is busy”.

Most times these problems are caused by one or more of the energy saving algorithms that Apple has created and added to their latest operating systems.   These algorithms work on the basic idea, to conserve power and allow you to use the laptop longer, it must start shutting down unused system services.  Unfortunately one of those services that is shut down is the printing service.  Most times the service will restart on it’s own when you go to print something, but every once in awhile, the laptop is unable to restart the service and you are left with one of the aforementioned errors.

The easiest way to prevent this from occurring or to help the laptop restart the service, is to do a complete shut down and restart of the laptop.  This will reset the algorithms for energy savings, as well as allow the laptop to restart all needed system services that may have been turned off to save power.  Plus, regular shut downs and restarts help the laptop run more efficiently.

Sometimes even this will not be enough to restart the printing services.  If this is the case the last resort will be to manually reset the printing system.  This method will delete any printers you have installed, but will force the print services to start working.  To perform a reset of the printing system do the following:

Step 1. Open “System Preferences”

Step 2.  Go to “Printers & Scanners”

Step 3. Hold down the “Control” key and click on a printer

Step 4. Select “reset printing system”

Step 5. Click the “+” in the lower left corner

Step 6. Re-add a printer.

Now you should be able to print without a problem.
